# Snag: Construction Site Inspection App

Snag is a construction site inspection app designed and developed by Space-O Canada that helps teams create site audits and generate professional reports online. Inspectors simply take a photo, record the issue, annotate it, assign it to the right person, and share a paperless report from anywhere, with no repeat site visits.

Available on iOS and web, Snag works as a complete construction inspection app, construction site inspection app, site inspection app, snagging app, punch list app, site audit app, and inspection report app, covering audits, inspections, punch lists, snagging, site walks, and checklists in one tool.

## About Snag

Site inspections traditionally mean handwritten notes, separate cameras, and hours assembling reports, which slows projects and lets issues slip through. Our client wanted to replace clipboards and paperwork with one mobile-first auditing tool where an inspector documents a defect on site and a paperless report is ready to share minutes later.

Snag had to cover the full workflow: audits, punch lists, snagging, site walks, and checklists, with photos, annotations, and task assignment built in. The client partnered with Space-O Canada to design, build, and QA the app for iOS and web.

## How We Built the Construction
Inspection App

This construction inspection software development project covered UX/UI design, native iOS development, [web development](https://www.spaceo.ca/services/web-development/), and QA. We built Snag around six core modules, each with a clear requirement and the solution we shipped.

### Create & Manage Site Projects

1

**Requirement**

Inspectors juggle several jobs at once, so each audit needed to sit under its own project.

**Solution**

We built project management where users create a project per site and group all related issues, reports, and checklists under it, managing multiple projects at once.

### Capture Photos & Record Issues

2

**Requirement**

Documenting a defect had to be as fast as pointing a phone at it.

**Solution**

Users take a photo of an issue, add the inspection details, and save it to the project, making Snag a fast field inspection app and site audit app.

### Photo Annotation & Markup

3

**Requirement**

A photo alone is rarely clear enough to point at what is wrong.

**Solution**

We added image annotation and a markup tool so users draw on a photo to highlight the exact defect.

### Assign & Track Issues

4

**Requirement**

Spotting an issue only helps if the right person resolves it and progress is tracked.

**Solution**

We built issue assignment so each defect is assigned to the responsible person and tracked to resolution, making Snag a defect tracking app and punch list app.

### Generate & Share Reports

5

**Requirement**

The client wanted professional, paperless reports produced and shared on the spot.

**Solution**

Report generation compiles project details, photos, and issues into a clean inspection report. As an inspection report app, Snag lets users share paperless reports by email or social media.

### Team Collaboration & Transparency

6

**Requirement**

Quality depends on everyone seeing the same information.

**Solution**

We added collaboration so inspectors share their monitoring views with team members and stakeholders, keeping projects transparent.

## Key Features of Snag

### Site Project Management

Create a project per site and manage multiple projects, reports, and issues from one place, like a focused construction management app.

### Photo Capture & Image Annotation & Markup

Take a photo of an issue and add inspection details on the spot, the core of this site inspection app. Use photo annotation and the markup tool to highlight the exact defect on any image.

### Issue Assignment

Assign issues to the right person and track them to resolution as a built-in defect tracking app.

### Punch Lists & Snagging

Run punch lists, snagging, site walks, and checklists in one snagging app workflow.

### Paperless Report Generation & Report Sharing

Compile project details, photos, and issues into a professional inspection report automatically. Share paperless reports by email or social media right after the inspection.

### Team Collaboration

Share monitoring views with stakeholders to keep every project transparent.

## FAQs About Construction Inspection Software Development

Most teams ask the same questions before they commit to a custom build. These are the ones we hear most often when planning construction inspection software development.

**What features are required to build construction inspection software?**

Core features include customizable checklists and digital forms, an in-app camera with GPS location and timestamps, photo annotation, and voice-to-text notes. You also need offline data capture, automatic background sync, issue and punch-list tracking, automated alerts, and detailed reporting with PDF export. Role-based access, a dashboard for project managers, and an audit trail are essential for larger teams.

**How much does it cost to develop custom construction inspection software?**

A focused mobile-first MVP with checklists, photo capture, offline mode, and reporting typically starts in the $50,000 to $90,000 range. A full platform with workflow automation, multi-project dashboards, analytics, and third-party integrations can run $120,000 to $250,000 or more. Cost scales with the number of integrations, the depth of offline support, and whether you build native apps plus a web portal.

**How long does it take to build construction inspection software?**

A field-ready MVP with offline inspections, photo capture, and reporting usually takes about 4 to 6 months. A complete platform with dashboards, integrations, and analytics generally needs 7 to 10 months. The timeline depends on how many inspection types, custom form templates, and back-office integrations you require.

**How do you build construction inspection software, step by step?**

Begin with discovery to map inspection workflows, form templates, and compliance needs, then design a mobile-first UX. Next, build the offline-capable mobile apps, the sync engine, and the backend for storage and reporting, followed by dashboards and integrations. Finish with field testing on real jobsites, QA, security review, and a staged rollout with training.

**Why should you hire Space-O Canada to build construction inspection software?**

Space-O Canada has experience delivering field apps that work reliably offline and sync cleanly once connectivity returns, which is critical on jobsites. The team can design custom checklists, GPS-tagged photo capture, and dashboards, and integrate with tools your crews already use. You get native iOS and Android apps, a web portal, and one partner accountable from discovery to support.

**How does construction inspection software work and how does it make money?**

Inspectors complete digital checklists on a phone or tablet, attaching GPS-tagged photos and notes that store locally and sync to a central dashboard once online. Managers review issues, assign fixes, and generate compliance reports automatically. For software vendors, revenue typically comes from per-user or per-project SaaS subscriptions, with established tools priced around $10 to $45 per user per month and enterprise tiers higher.

**Who needs custom construction inspection software, and why build custom instead of off-the-shelf?**

Construction firms, general contractors, and independent inspectors with specific workflows or compliance standards benefit most from custom software. Off-the-shelf tools force your teams into fixed templates and recurring per-seat fees, and rarely match unique safety or quality processes. Building custom makes sense when you need tailored checklists, proprietary reporting, or integration with your existing project systems.

**Why is offline mode so important for a construction inspection app?**

Many jobsites have poor or no connectivity, so inspectors must be able to complete forms, capture photos, and collect signatures without a signal. The app stores data locally on the device and syncs automatically in the background once a connection returns, preventing lost work. Offline-first design is considered non-negotiable for reliable field inspection software.

**What integrations should construction inspection software support?**

Common integrations include project management platforms like Procore, accounting and ERP systems, cloud storage, and BIM or document tools. A REST API and an embeddable SDK let you connect the inspection data to dashboards, CRMs, and reporting pipelines. Integrations reduce double entry and keep inspection findings flowing into the wider construction workflow.

**What tech stack is used to build construction inspection software?**

Native Swift and Kotlin or cross-platform Flutter and React Native work well for the field apps, paired with a local database such as SQLite or Realm for offline storage. The backend commonly uses Node.js or Python with PostgreSQL, plus a sync layer and cloud storage for photos. Hosting on AWS or Azure provides scalability, and push services handle alerts and notifications.
