Aviation Maintenance Software Development

Brakes Off is a cloud-based aviation maintenance software, designed and developed by Space-O Canada, that helps MRO service providers run faster, photo-rich aircraft inspections and replace slow paper-based inspection reports. Maintenance technicians select an aircraft, capture defects with photos and notes, and generate a complete maintenance, repair and overhaul record from a phone or tablet.

Built as a mobile aircraft inspection app with a cloud backend, Brakes Off works as a complete MRO software, aircraft maintenance software, aircraft inspection software, aviation inspection app, maintenance tracking software, cloud-based inspection software, aircraft maintenance app, and aviation repair station software, supporting on-arrival and departure inspections that protect aircraft airworthiness.

About Our Client - Brakes Off

About Our Client and Brakes Off

Based in Arizona, USA, our client runs an aviation MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) company serving private jet owners. Every aircraft that arrived for service had to be inspected and documented, and that documentation lived entirely on paper, with each defect logged by hand during a walk-around inspection on a paper-based inspection report.

Handwriting was hard to read between shifts, photos sat apart from notes, and there was no proof of location. Space-O Canada designed and developed Brakes Off to fix this, and the cloud-based aviation maintenance software automated about 80% of the process and cut duplicated work and errors by roughly 90%.

How We Built the MRO Software

This aviation maintenance software development project was a full MRO software development engagement spanning UI/UX, a native iOS inspection app, a cloud backend, and QA. Our mobile app development team built Brakes Off around six core modules, each with a clear requirement and the solution we shipped.

Replace the Paper-Based Inspection Report

1

Requirement

The client needed to retire the handwritten, paper-based inspection report that was slow to fill in and easy to misread.

Solution

We rebuilt the inspection form inside the aircraft inspection software, so a technician selects an aircraft, enters the order details and hours, and generates a complete on-arrival or departure inspection report digitally.

Capture Visual Data With Every Defect

2

Requirement

The old inspection form had a single “photos taken” box, so photo capture was disconnected from the description of each fault.

Solution

We tied photos to defects, so for each issue an operator adds multiple photos with a note in the same record, and the aviation inspection app stores each image next to its description.

Fix Communication Between MRO Operators

3

Requirement

Defects were explained verbally at shift changes, and unclear handwriting meant the next operator often misread the problem.

Solution

Every inspection now lives in one shared cloud-based inspection software record with photos, notes, and history, so any technician picking up the job sees what the previous operator found.

Digital Signature for Sign-Off

4

Requirement

On paper, the operator collected a pilot or owner signature to authorise the work, and the client wanted that inside the app.

Solution

We added a digital signature step where the pilot or owner signs on the device to acknowledge the work, and the signed record is saved with the report.

Voice-to-Text and Offline Mode

5

Requirement

Long notes took time to type, and hangars and remote sites lack internet, so the maintenance tracking software had to work without a connection.

Solution

We added Siri voice-to-text for dictating defect notes and an offline mode, so inspections are filled, photographed, and signed offline, then synced to the cloud once the device is back online.

GPS Verification and Searchable Records

6

Requirement

Paper reports carried no proof of location and were hard to retrieve, leaving the MRO provider exposed in a dispute or insurance claim.

Solution

We added GPS location stamping so each report records where it was created, and made every past inspection searchable, with one-tap export of a PDF report to share by email or SMS.

FAQs About Aviation Maintenance Software Development

Most teams ask the same questions before they commit to a custom build. These are the ones we hear most often when planning aviation maintenance software development.

What features are required to build aviation MRO maintenance software?

Core MRO features include work order management, task cards, inventory and parts tracking, scheduling, and digital inspection checklists. Compliance tracking for airworthiness directives, service bulletins, and life-limited parts down to flight-hours and cycles is essential, along with e-signatures and audit trails. You also need mobile apps with offline mode, dashboards and reports, and integrations with ERP, parts, and flight systems.

How much does it cost to develop custom aviation MRO maintenance software from scratch?

A focused MVP covering work orders, inventory, and inspections generally costs 120,000 to 250,000 USD. A full platform with compliance tracking, offline mobile apps, audit packs, and ERP integrations typically runs 250,000 to 600,000 USD or more. Integration with legacy systems alone can add 50,000 to 200,000 USD for large operators.

How long does it take to build aviation MRO maintenance software?

An MVP focused on work orders, parts, and inspections usually takes four to six months. A complete compliance-grade platform with offline apps, audit reporting, and integrations often takes nine to fifteen months. Regulatory documentation requirements and complex integrations are the main factors that extend timelines.

How do you build aviation MRO maintenance software step by step?

The process starts with discovery to map your maintenance workflows, regulatory needs, and integrations, followed by UX design for technicians and inspectors. Engineering builds work orders, inventory, compliance, and inspection modules in sprints with heavy QA against real procedures. After validation and pilot testing the system is rolled out with training, then refined using operational data.

Why should you hire Space-O Canada to build aviation MRO maintenance software?

Space-O Canada builds complex enterprise and compliance-driven software with offline mobile workflows, integrations, and detailed audit requirements. The team runs a structured discovery-to-launch process with transparent estimates and rigorous QA suited to regulated industries. You get a custom MRO platform built around your fleet, procedures, and FAA or EASA obligations rather than a rigid off-the-shelf product.

How does aviation MRO software work and how does it make money for MRO providers and operators?

Technicians receive task cards, record work and parts, capture inspection results with e-signatures, and sync records to the maintenance system once back online. The software keeps aircraft compliant and reduces unplanned downtime, which protects revenue for airlines and operators. MRO providers usually monetize through subscription licenses, per-aircraft or per-user fees, and paid modules or support tiers.

Who needs custom aviation MRO software, and why build custom instead of off-the-shelf?

MRO providers, airlines, and aircraft operators with specific fleets, procedures, and regulatory regimes benefit most from a custom build. Off-the-shelf tools often hide compliance modules behind unlock fees and rarely match your exact workflows or legacy integrations. A custom platform lets you own the data, fit your processes, and avoid recurring per-module licensing surprises.

How does the software handle FAA and EASA compliance tracking?

It tracks airworthiness directives, service bulletins, MEL items, and life-limited parts against flight-hours and cycles, not just calendar dates, using a maintained regulatory library. Digital records meet FAA and EASA Part-145 requirements with timestamped e-signatures and mandatory RII dual sign-off. This keeps each tail audit-ready and flags due or overdue tasks automatically.

Why is offline mode important and how is it built into the app?

Hangars, ramps, and remote shops often lack reliable connectivity, so technicians must raise defects, scan parts, and sign off task cards without a live connection. The mobile app stores data locally and syncs automatically the moment a connection returns, preventing lost work and double entry. This is built with a local database, conflict-handling sync logic, and queued uploads for photos and signatures.

How do digital inspection reports and system integrations work?

Inspectors complete digital checklists, capture pass or fail results, photo evidence, and measurements attached to each item, building a complete record at the moment of capture. One-click audit packs then export signatures, work orders, and AD compliance records for any aircraft and date range. Integrations connect the platform to ERP, inventory, and flight-operations systems so maintenance data stays consistent across the business.
